Aerial cinematography: from choosing a drone to the perfect shot

Aerial cinematography adds a scale impossible from the ground — but a good aerial shot is more than taking off.

Choosing the drone comes first. Modern compact drones (like the DJI Air family) offer high image quality, good dynamic range and even multiple lenses in a light body, enough for most commercial and industrial work.

Camera movement matters more: slow, purposeful moves — reveals, fly-overs and orbits — feel cinematic; fast, aimless motion looks amateur. Shoot in Log, use ND for the right shutter, and mind wind and harsh midday light. Safety and regulations are essential, and the best aerials blend with ground shots as part of one story.
