What is Log and why is it vital for color grading?

Log footage looks flat and desaturated on purpose: the goal is to retain maximum detail in highlights and shadows.

A sensor has wide dynamic range; baking in contrast and color at capture would throw away shadow and highlight detail forever. Log preserves it for the edit.

Log is not raw, but it preserves more flexibility

In grading you first bring Log into a standard display space (via a LUT or manually), then craft the look. A related idea is color space (like S-Gamut), which sets the range of colors captured — understanding both is the base of a clean grade.

Done right — with careful, slightly brighter exposure to keep shadows clean — Log is what separates ordinary video from a cinematic image.

At a glance

• A Log curve compresses tonal information to retain more scene detail.

• Color space and gamma curve are separate but related concepts.

• Grading cannot always rescue incorrect exposure or white balance.

A safe Log workflow

1. Record the camera profile, base ISO and color space.

2. Expose with waveform or false color rather than LCD brightness alone.

3. Apply the correct input transform through color management or a technical LUT.

4. Correct and match shots before building a creative look.

Log preserves latitude but depends on accurate exposure and transformation.

Common mistakes

• Severe underexposure followed by lifting shadows

• Applying a LUT or transform twice

• Mixing different white balances within one scene

Frequently asked questions

Is Log always better?

No. A ready-to-use profile can be safer for fast delivery or uncontrolled conditions.

Why does Log look gray?

Contrast and saturation are compressed to retain a wider range. A correct technical transform restores a normal starting image.
