Three-point lighting: the foundation of a professional image

Lighting separates a professional image from an ordinary one — even more than the camera. The foundation is three-point lighting.

The Key Light is the main, strongest source at an angle to build form. The Fill Light, weaker and opposite, softens harsh shadows without flattening the image. The Back Light rims the subject’s hair or shoulders, separating it from the background and adding depth.

Quality matters as much as direction: soft light (from a large source or diffuser) flatters faces; hard light gives contrast for an industrial, dramatic feel. The key-to-fill ratio is a storytelling tool — high for serious, low for friendly. The key is to design light, not just illuminate.
