What is an anamorphic lens and why does it feel cinematic?

An anamorphic lens optically squeezes the image horizontally, so a wider field of view fits onto the sensor. In editing the squeeze is undone, yielding a wide, cinematic aspect ratio.
Its visual signatures — stretched horizontal flares, oval bokeh and slight edge distortion — read instantly as “cinema,” because decades of major films used these lenses.
Unlike spherical lenses, anamorphics apply a squeeze factor (often 1.33× or 2×). A 2× feels more classically cinematic but demands more light and careful focus; 1.33× is more practical on modern sensors.
Used with intent — and planned lighting — anamorphics lift even a simple industrial subject into a film-grade frame. Used only for the effect, they can hurt readability, so intent matters most.
